Biography
From the Barber's Chair to the First Salon
Craftsmanship runs in Mark Melief's blood. Inspired by his grandfather, the barber, and his uncle who knew the ins and outs of barber competitions, Mark picked up scissors for the first time at the age of fourteen. It was love at first sight: a world where technique, creativity, and pure courage come together. At just 19 years old, while most of his peers were still finding their way, he opened the first Kinki salon in Rotterdam together with his great love Haidy. It was the beginning of a brand that would challenge the status quo and change the barbering world forever.
International Entrepreneurship and Creative Vision
What began with one salon grew under Mark's leadership into an international movement. At the age of 27, he became a co-owner of the franchise organization Kinki BV, which gave him responsibility for dozens of salons and hundreds of employees. Mark translated his creative vision onto a global stage: from developing innovative products with L’Oréal Professionnel to serving as the creative heart of Amsterdam Fashion Week for three years. With shows in 31 countries and collaborations with international fashion icons, he proved that eccentricity and large-scale commercial success can go hand in hand perfectly.
Craftsmanship as the Foundation for Freedom
Despite the international glamour and the big headlines, Mark has always remained true to the core of the craft. For him, a strong technical foundation is the only way to truly unleash creativity. He believes that craftsmanship, ingenuity, and passion are the essential ingredients for growth and appeal. His mission is therefore clear: to safeguard the unique Kinki identity and educate the new generation of creative professionals to become the leaders of tomorrow. For Mark, his profession is not a job, but a lifelong love and a constant quest for renewal.
A Lifelong Journey in Creativity
Together with Haidy, his partner in both life and business for over 38 years, Mark continues to build the experience of Kinki. His career is an inspiring example of how to create and maintain a 'love brand' by staying true to your own beliefs. Today, he shares his experiences as a speaker and strategist, inspiring others to operate from authenticity. Mark Melief embodies creative ingenuity; a man who demonstrates that if you dare to sail by your own compass, the whole world becomes your playground.
