After a youth in the United States, where he lived for seven years in New York and Virginia, he studied Law at Tilburg University. His talent for debate became evident early on when he reached the semifinals of the World Debating Championship in Vancouver in 2007. This background forms the foundation for his current work as a sharp analyst in the Dutch media landscape.
