Pete Philly

From platinum records and world tours to a life-threatening illness.

Pete Philly is an international creative force who conquered the world with the duo Pete Philly & Perquisite. From sold-out concerts worldwide and awards such as a Golden Harp and an MTV Award to acclaim in Rolling Stone: he set the gold standard for the Dutch urban scene for many years. However, at the peak of his fame, Lyme disease forced him to a sudden halt. He lost his health, income, and status due to a failing healthcare system, which compelled him to a lonely yet successful fight for recovery and self-sufficiency. This transformation made him an authority on resilience and 'mindset over matter.' Today, Pete shares his unique insights on reinventing oneself after a crash while actively coaching in the Music Academy of Martin Garrix and JBL and coaching, among others, Duncan Laurence at the Rock Academy. Pete Philly speaks with unparalleled depth about navigating rigid systems and reminds his audience that human value does not depend on productivity, but on the indestructible will to recreate. He thus provides a powerful blueprint for mental sovereignty.

Biography

Melting Pot of Cultures

Pete Philly was born in Aruba and moved to the Netherlands at a young age, where his unique melting pot of cultural influences laid the foundation for his creativity. With a background rooted in both Caribbean warmth and Dutch pragmatism, he developed an eccentric style that seamlessly blends hip hop, jazz, and soul. This cultural duality provided him with the language and perspective to create a sound that transcended national borders, marking the beginning of one of the most influential careers in the Dutch urban scene.

Global Fame

His big breakthrough came with the duo Pete Philly & Perquisite, with which he conquered the world. With hits like 'Mystery Repeats' and 'Insomnia', he won numerous awards, including a Golden Harp, European MTV Award, and multiple 3FM Awards. He toured non-stop around the world in 29 countries, performed at major festivals like North Sea Jazz and Lowlands, and was praised by international media such as Rolling Stone. These years were marked by an unprecedented creative flow and a status as the gold standard of Dutch hip-hop, proving that Dutch music could compete effortlessly on the global stage.

Surviving in Solitude

This success came to an abrupt end when Pete became seriously ill due to Lyme disease. What followed was a years-long survival journey, during which he not only physically collapsed but also ended up between the cracks of the Dutch healthcare system. Because his specific medical situation and the necessary treatments did not fall within the rigid frameworks of Dutch insurers, he received virtually no reimbursement. He lost everything: his income, his assets, and almost his life. This period exposed the painful shortcomings of our healthcare system and forced him into a lonely, costly battle for recovery abroad. Through his self-study of alternative therapies for body and mind, he overcame his illness.

The expert in mental resilience

Today, Pete Philly is back, not only as an artist but as a deeply inspiring speaker on mental and physical resilience. His experience with complete exclusion and his journey back to the top make him an authority in 'mindset over matter.' He speaks with impressive depth about how to maintain creativity in isolation, how to reinvent yourself after a total crash, and how to navigate systems that don't seem to work for you. Pete reminds his audience that your value as a person doesn’t depend on your productivity, but on your indestructible will to recover and recreate. He has also been active for years as a coach for artists at Martin Garrix's Music Academy and JBL, and at the Rock Academy for, among others, Duncan Laurence.
